Brian Bibby, noted scholar of California Indian culture and a Trustee of the Harry Fonseca Trust, delivers an illustrated talk on the artwork, legacy, and influence of Harry Fonseca (1946-2006). Of Nisenan Maidu, Portuguese, and Hawaiian heritage, Fonseca explored cultural and personal identity by colliding traditional Native design and imagery with iconography common to the Euro-American experience. Two of his prints are on display in the Museum’s current exhibition, Metaphor, Myth, & Politics: Art from Native American Printmakers.
Over the breadth of his long career, Bibby has been involved with Native communities, families, and individuals, preserving and documenting their various cultural art forms, languages, and oral histories. He has taught at numerous institutions, curated exhibitions, and authored books on Native subject matter. These include The Fine Art of California Indian Basket Weaving; American Masterpieces: Artistic Legacy of California Indian Basketry; Deeper Than Gold: A Guide to Indian Life in the Sierra Foothills; and Precious Cargo: California Indian Cradle Baskets and Childbirth Traditions.
