For the June edition of Writers Read, Steve Hellman will be the featured poet. Steve has been a spontaneous spoken word poet for the past four decades, creating mainly from audience prompts and also “the relevance of pure thin air.” He has appeared at venues from Los Angeles to New York City and Havana Cuba. Steve has also published poetry, short stories, translations, and articles in numerous publications including Fourteen Hills Literary Journal; City Lights’ Clamor of Innocence anthology; Zone: A Feminist Journal For Women and Men; and A Flame In The Heart anthology. He was a book reviewer for the San Francisco Chronicle from 1987 to 1992, and taught creative writing at Mendocino College for 18 years.
Writers Read has been happening in Ukiah since 1999, and occurs on the last Thursday of almost every month. The program focuses on poetry, spoken word, short stories, song, and expository prose. The evening begins with a featured reader and then is followed by an hour of open mic starting around 8:00.
